This notice describes what the site does with visitor data, in plain terms. The site is a static publication. It has no forms, accounts, newsletters or advertising, and it does not ask you to supply any information in order to read it.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies, and Plausible Analytics uses none. You will not see a cookie banner because there is nothing to consent to. If that changes, this notice will be updated before the change takes effect.

Analytics in detail

We use Plausible Analytics to understand how the site is used, for example which guides are read and which downloads are used. According to the Plausible data policy:

  • It uses no cookies.
  • It collects no personal data.
  • It does not track visitors across sites.
  • Your IP address and user agent are used to create a daily-rotating salted hash that counts unique visitors. The IP address is not stored.
  • It collects aggregate data: page URL, referrer, browser, operating system, device type, and country, region and city derived at request time.
  • File downloads and outbound link clicks are counted as events.

In practice, that means we can see that a page was viewed a certain number of times and roughly which countries the views came from. We cannot see who you are, follow you from one visit to the next on another day, or build a profile of you. We do not combine analytics with email correspondence. Please check the Plausible policy for its current wording, because it is the source of these statements and its operator can change it.

Site search uses Pagefind, which runs in your browser. When you open search, your browser fetches parts of a static index file from our hosting provider, which are ordinary files like any other on the site. The matching of your words against that index happens on your device. Search terms are not sent to us as text. The hosting provider may log the file requests that your browser makes, in the same way it logs any request for a page or an image, but those requests identify index fragments and not the words you typed.

Downloads

The CSV templates listed on the resources page are static files. Requesting one is an ordinary file request to our hosting provider, and no email address or sign-up is needed. Plausible counts a download as an aggregate event, so we can tell how many times a template was fetched. The count is not linked to a named person.

Guides link to outside sources such as standards bodies, government agencies and manufacturers. Once you follow a link, you are on another site, which has its own privacy policy and its own practices. We do not control those sites and cannot describe what they collect. Read their notices before you give them any information.

Email correspondence

If you write to us, we receive your email address, the content of your message, and whatever else your email program includes, such as the date and any attachments. We use these to read and answer your message, to check a reported error against sources, and to keep a record of corrections and rights questions. We keep correspondence for as long as needed to handle the request, and for as long as we need a record of a correction or a rights matter that came out of it. We do not use your address for marketing, and we do not add you to any list. The contact page describes what to include in a message.

Hosting and delivery

The site is delivered through hosting and content delivery services. To deliver pages and keep the service secure, those services process technical request data, such as your IP address, the address of the page requested, the time, and your browser’s user agent. This is routine for any website. Providers may process that data in countries other than the one where you live. We do not name providers on this page, and their handling of that data is governed by their own terms and practices.

Forms, accounts and advertising

At present the site has no forms, accounts, newsletters, or advertising. Because there are no accounts, there is no login data, no password and no profile. Because there is no advertising, there are no advertising identifiers and no data shared for that purpose.

Children

The site is written for people who buy, specify and maintain equipment, and it is not directed at children. We do not collect personal data through the site from anyone, including children. If a child has written to us by email and a parent or guardian wants the message removed, write to us and we will handle it as a privacy request.

Security

The site is a collection of static pages, which limits what can go wrong: there is no database of visitor records and no login to attack. Pages are delivered over an encrypted connection. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot promise that it will never be affected by a fault or an attack. We do not claim any security certification or audit for the site.

Your choices

You can read the whole site with scripts blocked. If you block Plausible, or use a browser setting or extension that blocks analytics, the pages, the search and the downloads continue to work as before. If you prefer that search not load its index, you can browse the guides from the home page and the four topic hubs. You also decide whether to email us and what to put in a message.

Your rights and requests

You can ask about, or request access to or deletion of, any personal information we hold about you by writing to us. Because the site collects no personal data itself, that information is usually limited to email correspondence. Rights available to you depend on where you live, and we will respond in line with the law that applies to you. You may be asked for enough detail to locate your correspondence. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may be able to contact a data protection or consumer authority where you live. See the contact page for what to include in a request.

Changes

If this notice changes, we will update it and describe what changed on this page when the change is substantive.
